At our May meeting, David Waller gave a thorough overview of strategies to leverage IP before a patent is issued and what makes a patent strong and valuable. David is immediate Past President of SDIF and has been a patent agent for many years. We had a smaller audience than we have had recently at our new meeting location at the law offices of Knobbe Martens, 3579 Valley Centre Drive, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92130. We look forward to seeing more repeat attendees at our June meeting.
Our April meeting on Artificial Intelligence generated so much discussion that we have schedule a follow up meeting on that topic to be presented by Thomas Acampora. He will demonstrate how inventors can use AI to do research and develop strong claims for their patents.
At each meeting, SDIF board member, Michele Nash-Hoff, also gives a brief update on the work of US Inventors to restore patent rights since the organization was founded in 2014 after the America Invents Act of 2011 destroyed the patent system as we knew it, especially by the creation of the Patent Trial and Review Board (PTAB) that has been invalidating up to 84% of patents in the past couple of years. US Inventor is the only organization representing small inventors, businesses, and startups to enact change that supports these groups, and it has grown to about 87,000 members over the past couple of years. If you haven’t already signed the Inventor’s Rights Resolution, you can sign here.
At our May meeting, Michele discussed two new bills that have been sponsored and introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Marcy Kaptur. We urge you to contact your Congressional Representative and ask them to support these bills. If you don’t how who your Congressional Representative is, you can find who he/she is using your zip code at this link. Then, you can call the U.S. House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to get connected to the office of your Representative.

SDIF President's Message
Ambitious inventors often come up with truly original ideas that no one else thought of before. They tend to see themselves as the true trailblazers, but they soon realize that creating brand new, unproven gizmos and gadgets has some clear downsides.
After successful completion of the costly R&D stage, patent filing, having production all set up and being ecstatic about hitting the market, they suddenly hit the wall of inertia and indifference. At this stage they usually start looking for an expert who probably doesn't exist. Luckily there are inventor support groups like SDIF capable of providing help, support and guidance.
I won’t see you at the next meeting because I am in Poland visiting family and friends.
