Our February meeting will feature a presentation by David B. Waller M.S. J.D on the topic of “What a Patent Application Should Contain”. His presentation will briefly cover the laws that established the U.S. patent system, the Code of Federal Regulations that govern prosecution of patent applications and patent application preparation in view of these laws and regulations. Mr. Waller was a research scientist for ten years in the field of biochemistry specializing in therapeutics and diagnostics and has been a patent agent with a law degree for over 30 years focusing on patent prosecution in the fields of chemistry, biotechnology and mechanical engineering.

At the January meeting, we discussed the results of the survey regarding topics that our members would like to have featured at meetings in 2025 because we want to be sure to provide our members with what they need to succeed with their inventions. Attendees provided their input on the format and topics they would like covered at future meetings.  It suggested that we start the meetings a half hour later to allow more attendees to get to the meeting on time, and the Board approved the suggestion.  The topics recommended for future meetings were:

What should a patent contain
 Intellectual Property
Design for manufacturing
Prototyping
Manufacturing
Production methods and contacts
3D printing technologies and guidelines for design
Finding consultants for specific technical issues
Leveraging resources and collaboration
Licensing
Pitching to investors

Our February meeting is scheduled for 6:00 PM, Thursday, February 13, 2025 at the law offices of Knobbe Martens, 3579 Valley Centre Drive, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92130.  We encourage everyone RSVP to we will be able to provide for everyone’s needs. We hope we will have many more new attendees this year and that many will become regular attendees.

The San Diego Inventors Forum supports the work of the national organization, US Inventors, to restore patent rights since the organization was founded in 2014 after the passage of the America Invents Act of 2011. US Inventor is the only organization representing small inventors, businesses, and startups to enact change that supports these groups, and it has grown to about 87,000 members over the past couple of years. US Inventors now has a new petition that states:  THE UNDERSIGNED CALL ON CONGRESS TO PASS LEGISLATION TO ADDRESS THESE CRITICAL ISSUES

“Our patent system is in crisis. Recent changes to patent laws and Supreme Court decisions have adversely affected inventors such that the requirement in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of our U.S. Constitution of “securing for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their discoveries” is no longer achieved. It is nearly impossible to stop an infringer from using an invention without permission, or to make them to pay for the damage caused when they do.”

SDIF President's Message

Fellow Inventors, everybody is talking about patents like they would have an inherent value no matter what. The only inherent thing about all patents is that they cost money. The cost to conduct patent search, prepare/write the patent, filing fees, amendment/CIP fees, issue fees and last but not least the maintenance fees. Considering all that, is it still a good investment of your time and money? The answer is YES if we are dealing with really valuable IP that deserves to be protected by a truly ironclad patent. We will discuss this topic and much more at our upcoming meeting. See you there!
