Our January meeting will be an open forum where everyone will have the opportunity to share their successes or milestones and their goals for 2025. Networking with other inventors and sharing struggles, milestones, and successes is one of the benefits of being part or SDIF.
We will also discuss the results of the survey regarding topics that our members would like to have featured at meetings in 2025. If you didn’t complete the survey, please the link in your email to access it.
We want to be sure to provide our members with what they need to succeed with their inventions. Innovation is critical to rebuilding American manufacturing and obtaining patents is the first step in helping our country maintaining a global technology leader.
Our January meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2025 at the law offices of Knobbe Martens, 3579 Valley Centre Drive, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92130. We encourage everyone RSVP to we will be able to provide for everyone’s needs.
We hope we will have more new attendees this year and that many more will become regular attendees at our meeting location
The San Diego Inventors Forum supports the work of the national organization, US Inventors, to restore patent rights since the organization was founded in 2014 after the passage of the America Invents Act of 2011. US Inventor is the only organization representing small inventors, businesses, and startups to enact change that supports these groups, and it has grown to about 87,000 members over the past couple of years. If you haven’t already signed the Inventor’s Rights Resolution, you can sign here.
The good news is that the two Senate bills that US Inventors opposed: S. 2140: Patent Eligibility Restoration Act of 2023 (PERA) and S.2220 - PREVAIL Act were not voted on by the whole Senate or added to an omnibus bill. New versions of these bills would have to be introduced into this new session of Congress.
The two bills introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Marcy Kaptur that US Inventor supported did not get out of the IP subcommittee and will have to be reintroduced in this session. They were:
H.R. 8134, The Restoring America's Leadership in Innovation Act (#RALIA)
H.R. 8132, The Balancing Incentives Act (#BIA)
The bad news is that San Diego Congressman Darrell Issa has been reselected to be chair of the House sub-committee on Intellectual Property. He was a major backer of the America Invents Act and also sponsored legislation designed to make it harder to launch suits for patent infringement. US Inventor states, “His track record reveals a pattern of supporting policies that benefit powerful corporations and foreign competitors, including China, rather than protecting American innovators and entrepreneurs.” He also advocated reducing the ITC's powers in patent cases. His selection as chair would make it tougher to pass bills that restore inventors’ rights, eliminate or reform PTAB and increase the availability of injunctions for patentees.
We urge you to write a letter petition expressing your opposition to his selection. Further information and a sample letter that you can modify is available at this link: https://usinventor.org/usi-inventor-rights-resolution/
SDIF President's Message
First of all, I would like to wish everybody a very happy and prosperous New Year!
No matter what your endeavor, there comes a time of self reflection, even doubt when faced with hard facts. A reality check is unavoidable and the sooner you face it, the better you can deal with it. SDIF meetings are an ideal place to come face to face with other inventors who have gone through most if not all of the stages you are or will encounter. With your active participation and input at our upcoming meeting , we plan to identify the path for the group and the topics to be discussed during our meetings for the rest of the year.
We count on you being there!
