At our July meeting, Craig Harris shared his proven techniques for licensing consumer products. His presentation covered the fundamentals of product licensing, showing how entrepreneurs and hobbyists can transform their creative ideas into profitable ventures. He explained the step-by-step process of product licensing, going from concept development to commercialization. He briefly reviewed the essentials of identifying potential products, understanding your intellectual property rights, marketing and selling to manufacturers, and negotiating licensing agreements.
Each month, we have several new attendees in addition to those who have become regular attendees at our new meeting location at the law offices of Knobbe Martens, 3579 Valley Centre Drive, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92130.
At our August meeting, Chris Baker, President of OnTarget Design will give overview of the design to prototype to patent to production process. Chris has many years of experience helping inventors create the mechanical design for their new product. Then, he offers several ways to create a prototype including machining and 3D printing. He will also share his experience in inventing and marketing his own inventions.
At each meeting, SDIF board member, Michele Nash-Hoff, gives a brief update on the work of US Inventors to restore patent rights since the organization was founded in 2014 after the America Invents Act of 2011. US Inventor is the only organization representing small inventors, businesses, and startups to enact change that supports these groups, and it has grown to about 87,000 members over the past couple of years. If you haven’t already signed the Inventor’s Rights Resolution, you can sign here.
At past meetings, Michele briefly discussed two new bills that have been sponsored and introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Marcy Kapturin Congress.. We urge you to contact your Congressional Representative and ask them to support these bills. If you don’t know who your Congressional Representative is, you can find who he/she is using your zip code at this link. Then, you can call the U.S. House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to get connected to the office of your Representative.

SDIF President's Message
"Today's marketplace is moving and changing incredibly fast and the need for certain product categories may vanish as fast as it appeared. An ever-narrowing window of opportunity between identifying the problem, coming up with a great solution, and then finding and filling your niche, requires that an inventor moves forward at a breakneck speed and tenacity right from the get go. But, here's the problem: How do you dive into it without sufficient information or experience?
The answer is: you hire a PRO! Just as you hire a PRO for protection - NDAs, patents, trademarks, copyrights, you hire A PRO for production - physical proof of concept, creating a prototype all the way to a production model.
Having a finished/production ready product in your hands backed up by a Sell Sheet will allow you to show not only the product itself, but also that you are ready for the market. So, don't just talk about it - join us for an informative "Prototype Maker's Show and Tell" session on this topic at our upcoming meeting."
