At our June meeting, Thomas Acampora gave an interesting presentation on how inventors could use AI to do research and develop strong claims for their patents. He gave a real-time demonstration of using AI to do research to answer specific questions.

I was glad to see several new attendees in addition to those who have become regular attendees at our new meeting location at the law offices of Knobbe Martens, 3579 Valley Centre Drive, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92130.

At our July meeting, "Proven techniques for licensing consumer products" will be presented by Craig Harris. In today’s dynamic market, licensing consumer products has emerged as a lucrative opportunity for individuals seeking to capitalize on their ideas. This presentation explores the fundamentals of product licensing, emphasizing how entrepreneurs and hobbyists can transform their creative ideas into profitable ventures. We will delve into key topics including identifying potential products, understanding intellectual property rights, marketing and selling to manufacturers, and negotiating licensing agreements. Through real-world examples and practical tips, attendees will gain insights into the step-by-step process of product licensing, from concept development to commercialization. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newcomer to the world of product licensing, this presentation aims to equip you with the knowledge and tools needed to succeed in this exciting field.

At each meeting, SDIF board member, Michele Nash-Hoff,  gives a brief update on the work of US Inventors to restore patent rights since the organization was founded in 2014 after the America Invents Act of 2011. US Inventor is the only organization representing small inventors, businesses, and startups to enact change that supports these groups, and it has grown to about 87,000 members over the past couple of years.  If you haven’t already signed the Inventor’s Rights Resolution, you can sign here.

At the May & June meetings, Michele briefly discussed two new bills that have been sponsored and introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Marcy Kaptur.  We urge you to contact your Congressional Representative and ask them to support these bills.  If you don’t know who your Congressional Representative is, you can find who he/she is using your zip code at this link. Then, you can call the U.S. House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to get connected to the office of your Representative.

SDIF President's Message

Today's marketplace offers unlimited opportunities for individual inventors but this is not always a good thing. At least not for every creative person. True creators constantly come up with new ideas and have to make a very difficult decision to select the one invention that deserves 100% of their effort and have the discipline to follow through by putting the remaining ones on the back burner for a while.

After that decision is made, things get much easier. Based on my own experience with consumer products, it is best to consider licensing options first. Only after running out of licensing options, would I consider manufacturing and setting up a venture as an alternative.  So don't miss the opportunity to learn more about licensing techniques and join us for an informative session on this topic at our upcoming meeting.
