At our April meeting, Hudson Taylor presented a comprehensive overview of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how AI can assist inventors in developing new products. We had nearly a full house at our new location at the law offices of Knobbe Martens, 3579 Valley Centre Drive, Suite 300, San Diego, CA 92130.  It’s nice to see so many repeat attendees.

The presentation created so much discussion that we didn’t have time to have our Inventor Spotlight section before the meeting ended. If you would like to share your success at a future meeting, please let us know.

Our May meeting will feature a presentation by David Waller on strategies to leverage IP before a patent is issued and what makes a patent strong and valuable.  David is immediate Past President of SDIF and has been a patent agent for many years.

At each meeting, SDIF board member, Michele Nash-Hoff, also gives a brief update on the work of US Inventors to restore patent rights since the organization was founded in 2014 after the America Invents Act of 2011 destroyed the patent system as we knew it, especially by the creation of the Patent Trial and Review Board (PTAB) that has been invalidating up to 84% of patents in the past couple of years.  US Inventor is the only organization representing small inventors, businesses, and startups to enact change that supports these groups, and it has grown to about 87,000 members over the past couple of years.  If you haven’t already signed the Inventor’s Rights Resolution, you can sign here.

At our May meeting, Michele will discuss two new bills that have been sponsored and introduced by Rep. Thomas Massie and Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

H.R. 8134, The Restoring America's Leadership in Innovation Act (#RALIA),
H.R. 8132, The Balancing Incentives Act (#BIA)

SDIF President's Message

What is better or more valuable - a grand futuristic concept or a down to earth small improvement of something that already exists? There is often a better chance for inventors to make money in the short term with a small/gradual improvement of something that already exists than by developing some even more promising,  yet untested, unproven concepts which require substantial and costly R&D and commercialization effort before they reach the market.

At our May meeting, we will try to address the above question and discuss the value of IP protection and how it can make an invention idea more valuable and sellable. See you there.

Are you ready for a Fun Filled Sunday:  San Diego's Polish Community is celebrating Polish Constitution Day with ethnic food and entertainment this Sunday (May 5th) at the International Cottages in Balboa Park from 11am with an artistic program starting at 2pm.
